Coder 1 - HIM Revenue Cycle

Appropriately assigns diagnosis and procedure codes (ICD-9/10 and CPT) to outpatient ancillary records. Abstracts required data into the hospitals’ information systems. Meets the required productivity and quality standards. Engages in physician/provider communication for the resolution of coding issues.

Primary Duties: essential duties are denoted with ►
►    1.    Accurately assigns ICD-9/10 and CPT codes to outpatient ancillary accounts, including labs, radiology, ED and other ancillary services or minor procedures.  
►    2.    Consistently follows and applies the approved coding guidelines to ensure coding, billing and reimbursement accuracy.  
►    3.    Checks medical necessity on Medicare accounts, per written guidelines.  
►    4.    Accurately enters charges for applicable ED patient accounts.
►    5.    Accurately abstracts the required data in to the hospital information system.
►    6.    Works the missing documentation and recode lists in order to maintain timeliness of accounts receivable/billing.
►    7.    Engages in written or verbal physician/provider communication for the resolution of coding issues.
►    8.    Consistently meets the quality and productivity standards for all outpatient ancillary record types in accordance with the current productivity standards and policy.
►    9.    Maintains and utilizes the appropriate work flow tools for daily work.

    10.    Participates in the coding quality review process.

    11.    Follows the System confidentiality and security policies.

    12.    Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

►    1.    Must have a high school diploma, or equivalent.  
►    2.    Graduation from HIT/HIA program or nearing HIT/HIA program completion
Completion of medical terminology and anatomy and physiology coursework equivalent to the AHIMA courses and/or HIT/HIA program requirements; and Completion of the AHIMA Coding Basics Program.
►    3.    Upon training completion, meets established coding productivity and quality standards for all outpatient ancillary types.
    4.    Eligible to train on outpatient surgery/observation accounts once all outpatient ancillary training is completed (three (3) month period) and productivity and quality requirements are met for a minimum of three (3) months (if all requirements met for Level 2).
►    5.    Demonstrates knowledge of computer skills and applications, including the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
►    6.    Effective verbal and written communication skills.
